You may have heard.

"You have to be an expert to refinish marble."
"It takes years of training to make money in Stone Care."
"Every stone is different and must be treated differently."
"Stone care is an art."

Nonsense!

For a long time, I believed this.  I believed that the barrier to entry to getting into the stone refinishing business was so great that it would keep carpet cleaners and other cleaning trades out of the business for years.  In a way this is still true.  There are so many shortcuts being created to make it so you can get into the business without a lot knowledge, or training, and without new investment in equipment.  But why take a shortcut?  When you use many of these new products you are not delivering the same quality work that a trained stone refinishing professional will provide.

So what is the alternative?  Learn how to do it right.

This book is designed for the beginner.  It briefly explains the language and terms of the trade that you will need to confidently talk to customers during estimates.  You will get a brief  background in the chemistry and chemicals needed as well as an in depth look at the abrasives and methods used to refinish marble, travertine, and limestone floors.  Each section includes a step by step procedural recommendation that can be adapted for your use.

Each section is highlighted with full color pictures and explanations of the services and many of the steps needed to strip, deep clean, refinish, polish, and seal natural stone.

The book is divided into 3 parts.

Part 1 - Essential Knowledge - Including Fillers and filling holes, basic geology and chemistry of stone, an explanation of pH and the pH scale, Acids, Oxalic acid, Strippers.

Part 2 - Essential Skills - Including step by step guidelines for most of the services that you can offer with your new skills.
  • Procedures for deep cleaning natural stone & tile
  • Procedures for Stripping smooth and textured stone, tile, & pavers
  • Procedures for refinishing Marble, Travertine, & Limestone (MTL) to a hone or polish
  • Procedures for chemically polishing MTL
  • Procedures for sealing MTL & Granite.
Part 3 - Post Completion - Including educating your customers on floor maintenance and what to look out for.
  • Explanation of the cause of many maintenance problems.
  • Procedures that your customers can use to care for their surfaces.
With this knowledge and some practice you can create exceptional projects like this.

I beleive this book is a must for anyone interested in getting into stone restoration. The information is layed out in an easy to understand format that will alow any beginner to start restoring MTL, with easy steps that can be duplicated. As a business owner preparing to hire some employees in the near future I am thrilled to have a book that I can give them to learn the basics, from terminology and chemicals to procedures for useing a floor machine. There is no substitute for experience but this book will help the beginner have some confidence and a good level of expectation.

Logical stone care September 4, 2010
Reviewer: Andrew Zlot from Surrey, British Columbia Canada
I am so grateful to have met Ted and to hold in my hand the culmination of his experience, intelligence, and clarity of thought, as written in his Stone Care Guide. Ted has reduced stone restoration to its most basic elements and has thus taken a seemingly impossible trade and made it "easy". The genius of his book is that it DOESN'T teach you every minute detail of every stone out there, or how to specifically treat each one in an infinite number of scenarios. He  breaks stones down into a few broad categories and he teaches you a simple set of rules to follow in order to successfully restore practically anything in each category. This book will minimize your learning curve and maximize your profit. I can't say enough about Ted, his book, or his contribution to this industry. My sincere thanks.

Great book! February 3, 2010
Reviewer: James Simmons-StonePro Restoration from Donahue, IA United States
This book describes the 70/30 rule where 70% of jobs you come in contact with will be the most profitable while the other 30% can be risky in terms of predictability and profitability. I see the 70% as the part of stone restoration that can be broken down into a science while the 30% requires the finesse and intuition of an “artist”. Ted does a great job of laying the foundation for a successful stone restoration business through his systematic approach to a tricky business.
